It is often said that Java-Applets are unable to print out pages. This is not true, as you will see with CityGuide Digital Mapping System. By reading through the following information you will also be able to print under Java. Printing with Java A Java-Applet may not be able to initiate a print job on it's own, due to security measures within the programming language. It may however react to a print job which was issued by the internet browser, and thus start printing. Set your printer to landscape format. Depending on your specific screen resolution the printer will produce a page equal to the resolution you defined for CityGuide DMS. Accordingly, using a resolution of 1024x768 will fill a blank page in standard letter format. In order to start the print job, simply select [File] and [Print] from the menu bar of your browser. After successfully completing the print job you will be notified by the Status LED of CityGuide DMS:
Netscape 4.x-Browser make use of a so called Java VM which contains bugs in the printer interface. CityGuide DMS responds to these bugs by automatically scaling the result for proper viewing in this line of web-browsers. One draw back of this compensation method is a lower quality print out. All other browsers, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape 6, as well as all browsers that make use of the Java 2-Virtual Machine, produce perfect print outs. Troubleshooting Unfortunately some browsers tend to ignore the print interface implemented in Java and instead of a screen copy, present the user with an empty grey rectangle, or nothing at all. This may happen even when they claim to conform to the Java 1.1-standard. In most cases it is sufficient to re-install the Java-Virtual-Machine through the setup-program of your browser. Upgrading to a newer version is also possible. Links to the latest browsers and Java VM's can be found online at: http://cityguide-deutschland.com/en/browser.html. One other source for problems when printing with Java can be identified with insufficient user-rights for Java-applications within a network. Please have your system administrator verify that you possess sufficient rights, and if not, have them granted to your work space.
